There were many taverns around in those days, similar to motels and roadside restaurants today, including several "__ mile house taverns." You can find a number of them on Mills' Atlas. The Charleston District map in Mill's Atlas shows a "10 Mile House Tavern" located about 10 miles from Charleston along Goose Creek Road. Modern day Highway 78/58 approximates the route of old Goose Creek Road. Other taverns shown by Mills include: "4 Mile House Tavern" located in Charleston Neck along Goose Creek Road. "6 Mile House Tavern", "Quarter house Tavern", and "Dover's Tavern" located at the junction of Goose Greek Road and Dorchester Road. "8 Mile House Tavern" located on Dorchester Road between "Quarter house Tavern" and the Ashley Ferry. "18 Mile House Tavern", two "Breaker's Tavern's", and a "Reardon's Tavern" all located about a mile or two above Goose Creek Bridge near the junction of Wassamisa Road with the road to Strawberry Ferry, and the Back River Upper Road. "22 Mile House Tavern" and another "Reardon's Tavern" located on the road between Strawberry Ferry and "18 Mile House Tavern."
