SWILLEY, CALVIN ELBERT.	1812-1841 	ECHOLS

Calvin Elbert Swilley was born in Liberty County, March 29, 1812, oldest 
son of Reason F. Swilley (Vol.I). He was married in 1835 to Mary Howell, 
born 1811 in Barnwell District, S.C., daughter of Isham Howell who had 
moved to Lowndes County from South Carolina shortly before. Mr. and Mrs. 
Swilley had three children:

1. Mary B.	b. 1836, m. Elias Daniel, Sept. 12, 1858.
2. Elender S.	b. 1838, m. John R. Harper, Dec. 27, 1857.
3. Isham S.	b. 1839, m. Ist. Mary Harper, Aug. 21, 1856; 2nd. Martha 
Harper, daus. of John L.

Mr. Swilley served in the Indian War under his uncle, Capt. Samuel E. 
Swilley, in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, in 1837, and also under 
Capt. David R. Bryan in his company of Lowndes County militia, 1838.
Not long after marriage, Mr. Swilley moved to Hamilton County, Florida, 
where he lived until his death Sept. 16, 1841. His father qualified in 
Hamilton County as administrator of the estate, March 5, 1842. The widow  
 married on Oct, 8, 1843, in in Hamilton County, Elder Cornelius Bouie, a 
blind Primitive Baptist minister who was well known and greatly beloved 
among the people in this section in his day. She had no children by her 
second marriage. Soon after her second marriage, she and her second husband 
and her children moved back to Lowndes (now Echols) County, living there 
until 1855 when they moved to Irwin County where the children, by that time 
grown, married, Irwin Court of Ordinary records show Elder Bouie was 
appointed guardian for the children's estate, June 1, 1857.


SWILLEY, JESSE A.	1819-1841 	ECHOLS

Jesse A. Swilley was born Dec. 19, 1819, in Appling County, son of Reason 
F. Swilley (Vol.I). He was married in May, 1841, to Roxalena Morgan, born 
1823, daughter of Elihu Morgan (Vol.11). They had seven children, viz:

1. Martha	b. 1845, m. John Nobles.
2. Mary	b. 1847, m. Jesse Swilley (cousin), son of Reason E.
3. Thomas Charles**My Grgranpa*	b. 1849, m. Mary Jane Funderburk.
4. William	b. 1851, m. Julia Swilley (cousin), dau of Franklin, May 14, 
1875.
5. Eli	b. 1856, m. (unknown).
6. Salena	b. 1858, m. (unknown).
7. Preston B.	b. 1866, m. (unknown).

Mr. Swilley served three enlistments in the Indian War, viz: Private in 
Capt. Samuel E. Swilley's company, 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th 
to Dec. 16, 1837; 4th Sergeant in Capt. David R. Bryan's company, Lowndes 
County militia, July ist to Oct. 15th, 1838; and private in Capt. John J. 
Johnson's company of G e o r g i a militia, Jan. 28 1840 to Nov. 22, 1840. 
He also served as 2nd Lieutenant in the 904th district, Lowndes county 
militia, July 13, 1841 to 1851. He was cut out of Lowndes into Echols 
county, 1858.
Jesse A. Swilley died Sept. 26, 1864 at his home in Echols county, and was 
buried in the Swilley Cemetery in western Echols. His widow applied Aug. 
23, 1892, for an Indian War pension on account of the services of her 
husband above set forth, and same was granted. She continued to draw same 
until her death June 18, 1900. She was buried by her husband. She was the 
administratrix on her husband's estate, appointed shortly after his death; 
having wound up the estate in Dec. 1874, she applied for dismission and was 
dismissed in January, 1875, Court of Ordinary, Echols county.


SWILLEY, WILEY T.	1819-1847 	ECHOLS

Wiley T. Swilley was born in Appling County in 1819, son of Samuel E. 
Swilley (Vol.11). His wife, Maria, was a daughter of Moses Prescott (Vol.1) 
and was born in South Carolina in 1821. They were married in December, 
1838. They had four children:

1. Mary J.	b. 1839, m. Roland Roberts (son of Tharp).
2. Staten R.	b. 1843, died young.
3. Irwin Reason	b. 1845, m. Dicy Roberts, dau. of Wm. S.
4. Wiley T., Jr.	b. 1847, died young.

He was brought by his parents in his boyhood to Lowndes (now Echols) County 
when they moved there. He bought three lots of land in the 16th district of 
what was then Lowndes county, viz: lots 41, 42, 51, through which the 
Alapaha River runs; property was cut out of Lowndes into Clinch county in 
its formation 1850, and out of Clinch into Echols in its formation 1858. 
His home and plantation were on these lots.
Wiley T. Swilley served as 1st Sergeant under his father who commanded a 
company in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16th, 1837, 
in the Indian War. He served also in the same war as a private in Capt. 
David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes county militia, July 1st to Oct. 15, 
1838. He was Justice of Peace in the 904th district, Lowndes County, 
1840-42. He died in 1847, and on May 11, 1847, shortly after his death, 
Judge James Carter (Vol.I) applied for administration on the estate and was 
appointed. On July 20, 1847, the administrator applied to the Court of 
Ordinary of Lowneds county for leave to sell said three lots of land and 
the slaves owned by the deceased, and leave was granted in due course. On 
1st Tuesday in April, 1848, the property was bid in by the widow at public 
sale, and she thus became the owner of the estate property, and continued 
living there and reared her children to maturity there.
Mrs. Swilley was a member of Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in present 
Echols county; she was received and baptized April, 1849, and died a member 
about 1875-80.
Wiley T. Swilley was buried in a family burial ground on Bevill Mill Creek 
near Lake Park, Ga. His widow married James R. Miller, and she is buried by 
him in Statenville Cemetery (graves unmarked).


SWILLEY, WILLIAM MADISON.	1830-1908 	ECHOLS

William Madison Swilley was born May 13, 1830, in Lowndes (now Echols) 
County, son of Reason F. Swilley (Vol.1). He was married in Lowndes now 
Echols County, March 20, 18 51, to Rebecca Miller, born April 13) 1834, 
daughter of Benjamin D. Miller (VoL. III). They had fourteen children:

1. Samuel	b. Oct. 21, 1853, m. Josephine Bryan. Died Aug. 27,1909.
2. Sarah S.	b. Feb. 11, 1855, m. Beni. F. Prine.Died Apr. 26, 1927.
3. George W.	b. Sept. 17, 1856, died single in Florida.
4. John Sharp	b. Sept. 18, 1858, m. Emily Morgan, dau. of Joseph L.
5. James Archibald	b. Apr. 27, 1861, m. Frances L., dau. Christian Edward 
Zipperer.
6. Mary R.	b. July 15, 1863, m. Wiley Camp of Hamilton Co. Fla.
7. Thomas Timothy	b. Dec. 12, 1846, m. Lilla Neil of Marion Co. Fla.
8. Ella L.	b. May 21, 1866, m. Nat Boone.
9. William Francis	b. Nov. 4,1867, m. Lillie Tomlinson.
10. Martha E.	b. Apr. 15,1871, m. Ed Barnwell of Valdosta.
11. Dona	b. Jan 1, 1873, m. James S. O'Neal.
12. Peyton Oscar	b. May 5,1875, m. Fannie Caldwell.
13. Thomas B.	b. Jan 19, 1877, died single.
14. Dalton Bird	b. Feb. 26, 1879, m. Rev. Thos. J. Touchton.

Mr. Swilley's home and farm was on lot of land 116, l6th district of Echols 
County, which lot of land lays on the Florida line near Jennings, Fla. He 
was also the owner of other lands of adjoh-dng lots. He served as Justice 
of Peace, 121 Ith district, Echols County, 1859-1864 and 1865-1869. He was 
a Mason, member of Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, at Statenville; he received his 
Master's degree in that lodge in 1857 and was a charter member. He served 
as Junior Warden in his lodge, 1867-1872, inclusive, and held other lodge 
offices. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masonic Chapter in 
Valdosta, receiving his Royal Arch degree April 17, 1877. He remained a 
member of these orders until his death April 7, 1908. His wife died June 
12, 1893.
Mr. Swilley served as N.P. & Exofficio J.P., 1211 th district of Echols 
County, 1877-1878, resigning after a one-year tenure in office. He had 
previously been appointed to the same office in 1872 but declined to 
qualify.
