TYSON, JOSEPH T.	1859-1934 	TIFT

Joseph Thomas Tyson was born February 12, 1859 in Meriwether County, 
Georgia, the son of Jehu Tyson and Mary Elizabeth Patillo, and the grandson 
of William Tyson and Penelope B. Dixon. The Tysons had moved from Anson 
County, North Carolina in 1838. They lived in the 2nd District of Carroll 
County, Georgia near Villa Rica. After 1870, this area became part of 
Douglas County, Georgia.
In 1878, Joseph Thomas Tyson married Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Swafford, the 
daughter of Soloman W. Swafford and Mary Hembree of South Carolina. They 
had five children:

I - Wiley Alannon	b. 3/7/1880, m. Lelia Gilds 	d. 9/8/1954.
2. Warner Horatio	b. 5/13/1881, m. Lemmer Ergil, 12/29/1907, dau. of Virgil
	d. 7/27/1930.	Fredwick and Mary Harris Ergil, b. 2/14/1882, d. 11/4/1945.
3. Alice Idora "Ida" 	b. 10/19/1882, m. Milton Wesley Smith, 12/10/1899, b. 
10/3/1878, d. 10/24/1934.
4. Joseph Henry	b. 4/24/1884.
5. Mary	b. 2/13/1886.

Mollie died in 1886 after the birth of her last child. Joseph Thomas Tyson 
then married Mollie's sister, Lula Lucinda Swafford, born November 5, 1867. 
Joseph and Lula had fifteen children:

7. Mary Lenora	b. 8/26/1888, m. Irby Gresham Williams, dau. of Barnett

9. John D.	b. 8/30/1891, m. Lettie Milam, dau of John Wm. Arthur
		Milam and Lucy Elizabeth Steed, b. 3/25/1893, d. 12/26/1976.
10. William Edward	b. 2/11/1893, 	Sergeant, U.S.Army. d. 10/12/1918.
11. Oscar Marion	b. 8/24/1895, m. Eva Mae Ennis. d. 4/19/1977.
12. Queenie Bell	b. 8/31/1897, d.before 1900.

13. Billie	b.	????,	died at birth.
14. unnamed twin	b.	????,	stillborn.
15. unnamed twin	b.	????,	stillborn.
16. unnamed twin	b.	????,	stillborn.

On February 12, 1907, Lula Tyson died. In August of 1907, Joseph Thomas 
Tyson married Polly Ann Elizabeth Swafford, daughter of William Henry 
Swafford and Ollie Emaline Daniell. William Henry Swafford was a brother of 
Joseph Thomas Tyson's first two wives. Polly was born December 22, 1879. 
They had the following children:

		James Wm. Wynn and Nancy Jane Alexander.
22. Solomon Wesley 	b. 1/5/1910, m. Mary Mason, 6/13/1931, dau. of Henry
	d. 11/16/1979.	Dennis Mason and Mary Frances Harrilson.
23. Arthur Howard 	b. 6/11/1911, m. Ephie Ruth Garrison, 5/1937, dau. of 
Wm.
	d. 11/22/1946.	Newton Garrison and Jannie Hale.
		Howard and Ephie were killed in an auto accident.
24. Ruby Mae	b. 1/15/1913, m. Guy Harris Boyd. d. 8/16/1955.
25. Jelm	b. 6/19/1914, m. Nora Mae Mason, 10/1/1932, dau. of
		Henry Dennis Mason and Mary Frances Harrilson.
26. Buford Beaton	b. 10/20/1915, m. Evelyn Cravey, 6/3/1938. d. 2/14/1968.
27. Effie Maurine	b. 2/17/1918, (twin) d.2/20/1918.
28. Edna Etheleen 	b. 2/17/1918, m. Jeff Andrew Garrison, 12/17/1937, son 
of
(twin) 	William Newton Garrison and Jannie Hale
29. Lewis Cleland 	b. 10/25/1919, m. Louise Hale, 11/11/1937, dau. of Floyd 
Hale.

After Joseph Thomas Tyson married, he lived at Bill Arp, a small town in 
Douglas County, Georgia, where he farmed and his wife ran a store. About 
1916, he and most of his family that were not married moved to Turner 
County, Georgia. Two years later he moved to an area east of Tifton about 
five miles out of town on Bowen Road.
Mr. Tyson had been a preacher since about 1900, and in 1918, he became a 
full time Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church. He served Turner Primitive 
Baptist and Pilgrim's Home (Sycamore, Georgia). He was a member of Valley 
Grove Church in Irwin County November 16, 1934. His wife, Polly Ann 
Elizabeth Tyson, died August 12, 1950. They are buried at Turner Primitive 
Baptist Church in eastern Tift County and their graves are marked.
