This is a "Get acquainted" message, my having recently subscribed.  My
ggg-grandfather, Hugh Edward Phillips, b. 1759, Kendal, Westmoreland (now
Cumbria), England, immigrated to NY in 1773, came to SC with Pulaski's
Legion and settled in Orangeburg/Aiken area after Pulaski's death at
Savannah. He married Mary Bolin, daughter of Edward Bolin and Nancy Salley.
Ed Bolin immigrated from Ireland to Charleston in 1767 and settled in the
Orangeburg area.

Their direct descendents to me are: Hugh Bolin Phillips/Mary A.T.
Winningham; Joseph Winningham Phillips/Emma Holman & Martha ?; Rufus Felder
Phillips/Emily Tew Rogers and my Father/Mother, Atma Felder
Phillips/Jessamine Gabriel.

Several of these are buried at Rocky Swamp Methodist Church, near
Springfield, SC on SR 4. Hugh Phillips & Edward Bolin have DAR plaques at
Rocky Swamp, but I am not sure that they are actually buried there. Rufus
moved his family to Spartanburg, SC abt. 1908. They are buried in that area.

I have more on the other Phillips branches, the Winninghams and the Rogers,
courtesy of kind researchers, but little on Gabriel. My grandparents Elias &
Mary Gabriel immigrated to NY in 1889 and settled in Miss.  They moved to
Spartanburg, SC abt. 1904.

As far as I know, no one has been able to extend the Hugh Phillips, Edwin
Bolin or Elias Gabriel lines back to before they immigrated.

I visited the Rocky Swamp Church a couple of years ago and saw that it and
its grounds have been maintained, but apparently the church is not in
regular use.  I'd be interested to learn more about this church and any
records of it that may exist.  Since property had to be bought and sold by
my people in the area, I plan to research any of those records I can find.
I'm interested in any information as to where and how they lived and the
area history as affected them.
