Hello
I looked up Sowell in a book of American Surnames by Elsdon C Smith , and
Sowell wasn't there. If you look at old handwriting, someone may have
written Powell and it was mistaken as Sowell - Often the old S looked like a
f. Perhaps a longshot. Powell means "the son
of Howell" ie "ap Howell" and this is Welsh. If you look at old
handwriting you will see what I mean.
I have a surname that I have not found anywhere: SOTROE and I am always
looking for Sotroe, Fotroe and Potroe as it could come from that same type
of error.
Good luck
Gaila
