During this decade from 1850-1860 just prior to the Civil War, the
closeness of both the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers to Winston County,
AL and the rest of NW Alabama made it become a "melting point" for a
diverse nation migrating ever north, south, east and west.  Winston County
itself had as its first settlers many immigrants who had fought in the
Revolutionary War and the Mexican War and would therefore become Union in
its flavor when the outbreak of the Civil War occurred.  
The 1st Alabama Cavalry 229 soldiers making the aggregate Union total 239. 
Of that number 209 of them were from Winston County.  Some of this Calvary
regiment were from other states but buried in Winston County (10).  This
book also gives a cemetery listing for surnames buried not only in Winston
County, but the surrounding counties of Cullman,  Lawrence,  Morgan, 
Franklin and Walker Counties of Alabama.
An example of this would be the following information taken from a
tombstone:

Stephen Garrison, Rev. War. 1757-1841
Pvt. N.C., A. Shaw's Co. 4th Cav. Reg.
Payne-Garrison Cemetery in woods,  Winston County.

William Akins (SC) War of 1812
    1788-1878
Thomas Cemetery, Rocky Plains, Winston County

And then there are a few surnames listed as being the daughter of someone
which gives a clue as to who she was prior to marriage and some of those
names were not in the surname listing.
I also found a Wyatt D. Cheatham born in Iredell County, NC so some of them
are more specific.  As I have time, I will try to go through the cemetery
surname listings to see what names have not already been posted and get
them up.
If you wish a surname lookup, I will do so but please only list ONE surname
per request.  My time is just as valuable as yours and I intend to look for
a surname in both census reports as well as the cemetery listings when you
write.  I don't want to have to concentrate on a dozen names at the same
time and I will use the reply to author part of my email so it is important
just to send one name per email request.
