Greetings from SC. I am not familiar with Groomsville but I think you are
talking about Strawberry Chapel (Espicopal).
"South Carolina Highway Historical Marker Guide," published by the SC Dept.
of Archives & History, 1992, p. 26:
"Strawberry Chapel
Road 44 about 7 miles off SC 402
Chapel of Ease to St. John's (Biggin Church), built about 1725 on land
bequeathed by James Child, founder at this place of Childbury. Strawberry
Ferry was established by Act of Assembly in 1705."
Strawberry Chapel was not destroyed during the late unpleasantness-- it
stands today. The graveyard there was the site of the famous "Catherine
CHICKEN incident." Other families associated with Strawberry Chapel are the
HARLESTONs & the BALLs.
In the list archives, you will find more info on Strawberry Chapel which I
posted many months ago. If you cannot locate it, let me know & I will try to
find time to retype the info.
