Subject: Strawberry Chapel & Childbury From: URQ5 Date: May 05, 1998 Strawberry Chapel (Episcopal) was constructed c1725 on land given in the will of James CHILD. James CHILD (grandfather of Catherine CHICKEN) was founder of the settlement of Childbury which existed in the first half of the 18th century but was abandoned by 1815. Strawberry Ferry, established by the SC Asembly in 1705, was located nearby. Strawberry Chapel was built as a "chapel of ease" for the Biggin Church (St. John's Parish). Today, the chapel is all that is left of Childbury. Some prominent SC names found in the graveyard are BALL and HARLESTON. The grounds and cemetary are open to the public; the chapel is not. Strawberry Chapel is located on Hwy. 44, about five miles from Cordesville, SC (which is southeast of Moncks Corner, in Berkeley County).
