Since a few have requested me to post the respones to my request for info on
the State Hospital in Columbia, I am posting the following two which I think
will help all of us.
1)
You won't be able to get any info from the State Hospital in Columbia as the
records are not available to the public until they are 100 yrs old. You do
know that it was a mental institution, don't you?? Used to be called the SC
Insane Asylum in the 1800's. The SC Archives have records from 1838 when it
was opened until the late 1890's.
Only a close relative can have access to the later records. You might be
close enough. You can call them and ask for the person in charge of the
Archives and she might can help you.

2)
I got an aunt who lived in Ga. to get a court order for the records of her
grandmother. The hospital made copies and sent to us. The first thing I
did was call them, and they gave me the instuctions.
I have been looking over the Columbia SC phone book and find a whole page of
numbers for the Dept of Mental Health.
I think the hospital is located at 2100 Bull St., so I am listing some
numbers that might be your first contact point.

Information SCDMH - State Hospital
803-734-6546, 2100 Bull St.
Information - 803-734-7038
Dept of Mental Health -

Hope this is helps you and me get records or atleast head us in the right
direction.
