Subject: Stansell From: Derrell O. Teat Date: August 22, 1999 Hello List, Bear with me as I tell a story: Thought I'd try again My Grandfather John Thomas Oakley married Mary F. Kurchoff around 1877. Family legend says that after Mary's birth, her father suddenly left home and assumed to return to Germany. Shortly thereafter her mother died and Mary was "taken" by a family to rear as their own. Her adopted parents were Darcus Watkins Abbettmeyer & Frederick Abbettmeyer. We think they were actually the Great Aunt & Uncle. The relationship is described as thus: Mary's mother was a ???? Stansell, daughter of Nancy Watkins Stansell. Nancy & Darcus were sisters, the daughters of William & Elizabeth Watkins. Other brothers & sisters I think were: D.M., George, Benjamin, John A., William Jr., Cecelia Chastain, Elizabeth Beck The 1850 Pickens census list the following: William Watkins age 101 MW Farmer b VA Elizabeth 90 WF b VA Dorcus 40 WF b VA Stansell, Martha 15 WF b VA Stanford, Martha 13 WF bVA Stanford, Catharine 11 WF b VA Stansell, William 19 WM b VA My best guess is that the mystery Stansell mother of Mary F. Kurchoff COULD very well be the above Martha Stansell who appears to be the niece of Dorcus. Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated, we have looked for YEARS.
