Thanks to all who responded so quickly to my query.  As I wrote to Ken
who suggested that St. Ate might be a typo that should have been State:

"You are probably right!  How simple!  I'm too embarrassed to tell you
how
long I labored over "St. Ate," scouring the list and maps of SC Parishes

for that time period, and how many exotic meanings I constructed.

Thanks for removing the cobwebs of "deep and mysterious meaning" from my

eyes.  It a reminder  that, difficult as it sometimes is to decode
genealogy clues, I must periodically remember to KISS -- keep it simple,

stupid!"
