Subject: St. Andrew's Parish, 1706(FITCH, ROSE, NAIRN, GRIMKE-DRAYTON) From: URQ5 Date: April 24, 1998 The Church Act of 1706 established 10 parish churches, one of which was St. Andrews Church near Charleston. The baptismal font has the three pelicans, symbol of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The church has had several additions/ renovations since its construction in 1706. The inscription "Superv. 1706 J. F.- T. R." is presumed to have been put there by brick masons & wardens, Johnathan FITCH & Thomas ROSE. Other names of interest associated with St. Andrew's Parish Church are William BULL, early member of the vestry, and Rev. GRIMKE- DRAYTON of Magnolia Plantation. The son and wife of Thomas NAIRN, Indian trader, are buried in the graveyard next to the church. The story of Nairn's murder by Indians (burned to death during the Yemassee War) appears on the gravestone of his wife. St. Andrew's Parish Church is located on Hwy. 61 (west of the Ashley River), 8- 10 miles from downtown Charleston.
