Oct. 10, 1864 - Appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing.
Apr. 27, 1865 - Appears on a Muster Roll of Officers and Men paroled in
accordance with the terms of a military Convention entered into on the
26th day of April, 1865 between General Joseph E. Johnston, Commanding
Confederate Army, and Major General W.T. Sherman, Commanding United
States Army in North Carolina.
May 2, 1865 - Paroled at Greensboro, N.C.
**John Alexander Sowell's War Record**
1  Company G (Flat Rock Guards) was organized January 16, 1861 by an act
of the legislature of South Carolina, and was called into service of
Virginia on April 28, 1861, under command of Col. J.B. Kershaw and
mustered into service of the Provisional Government on the 22nd of May,
1861.  C.C. Haile, Capt.
   The Flat Rock Guards under Capt. Hile, had a total enrollment of 139;
From Kershaw Co., 114; killed or mortally wounded 31; wounded 43; died in
service 20; total casuality 93.  This company derived its name from its
home headquarters at the Granite Hill known as "Flat Rock".
2  Company G was stationed first near Richmond, Virginia at Camp Davis.
3  Company G was engaged in the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg,
Maryland on Sept. 17, 1862 and John A. Sowell was wounded.
4  Between May 1, to Oct. 31, 1862, John A. Sowell was promoted from
Private to 4th Corporal.
5  The first of two furloughs granted to John A. Sowell - Oct. 9, 1862.
Company G engaged in Battle at Fredericksburg, Va. Dec. 13, 1862.
6  John A. Sowell was promoted from 4th Corporal to 3rd Corporal, between
Dec. 31, 1862 and Feb. 28, 1863.
7  Company G was engaged in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va. May 2-5,
1863. 8  Company G returned to Fredericksburg, Va. and remained there
until June 3, 1863.
9  Company G moved toward Chambersburg, Pa. where they arrived June 29,
1863. 10 Company G engaged in Battle at Gettysburg, Pa. and on July 2,
1863.  John A.
 Sowell was left wounded on the field.
11 John A. Sowell was a Prisoner of War from July 2 - Aug. 24, 1863 at
DeCamp General Hospital, Davids Island, New York Harbor.
12 Between Sept. 20-Oct. 31, 1863 John A. Sowell had been promoted from
3rd Corporal to 2nd Corporal.
13 Company G transferred to the Army of Tennessee and engaged in the
Battle of Chickamauga Sept. 19-20, 1863.
14 Company G engaged in the skirmish at Knoxville, Tenn. Nov. 18, 1863
and John A. Sowell was granted his second furlough home.
15 General Longstreet was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness on May
6, 1864 and John A. Sowell related to his grandson Frank Files Sowell
that he, too, was wounded.
16 Battle at Fishers Hill, Va. Sept. 22, 1864.  William J. Jones and B.N.
Jones related to Hon. Joe E. Webb, County Judge of Madison County, Texas
concerning John A. Sowell's Confederate service; "Dear Sir; If any doubt
remains ask John A. Sowell if he remembers the block of wood that hit him
on the back of the head.  If he says Fishers Hill, Va. O K his papers. 
P.S. Our kindest regards to our old comrad.  Jones & Jones." On John
Alexander Sowell's application for a Pension (#31177), James Wiley
Sowell, John's brother, made this statement on April 12, 1915:  "John A.
Sowell is my brother and I was 14 years old when he enlisted in 1861 at
Camden Kershaw District, now Kershaw County, S.C. during the war he came
home twice because of wounds, and in 1865 just before the close of the
war, I visited him in camps while in active service in North Carolina."
