John Cooper
Jacob Nicholas
*******
I am seeking information on my ggrandmother, Lucinda Nicholas who was
born in Alabama in 1820 and died in Handsboro, Mississippi on Dec. 26,
1902.
She was the daughter of JACOB NICHOLAS (Nie-col-us), son of JOHN COOPER,
who was a Choctaw Indian Chief who signed the Great Indian Dance Treaty.
She married my ggrandfather, Charles Woodbury Creel in 1837. OF the
Thomas and Elizabeth Dearman Creel family line of Jones CO., MS. Charles
Woodbury Creel's brother, Wesley Creel, married Jerusha Nicholas,
Lucinda Nicholas' sister. Their father was Jacob Nicholas who was born
in Tennessee.
** I am quoting from an out-of-print BOOK "Anywhere I Wander I Find
Facts and Legends about the Creel Families". (written by J.OWENS 1975)
She was the daughter of JACOB NICHOLAS, son of JOHN COOPER, a Choctaw
Indian Chief who signed the Great Indian Dance Treaty, supposedly at
Shubuta, MS.
LUCINDA NICHOLAS was a midwife." My questions are: If LUCINDA NICHOLAS
is the daughter of JACOB NICHOLAS, who was the son of JOHN COOPER, why
was his name JACOB NICHOLAS and not JACOB COOPER? Is this a matriarchal
way among Native Americans that they carry the mother's name instead of
the father's name. Also, does this mean that JACOB NICHOLAS was the
Indian Chief and if so, how do I find out his Indian name? I have
searched US-Indian Treaties and the closest I can come to what is in the
book "Great Indian Dance Treaty" is the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek
and found it on-line. Searched the signatures on it and there is no JOHN
COOPER nor JACOB NICHOLAS, unless JACOB NICHOLAS was the chief and had
an Indian name. The only thing I have found on JOHN COOPER is that he
worked among the Choctaws in Mississippi. I have searched on the
Internet and in libraries and encyclopedias and that is all I have
found.
Thanks.

Greetings

I think I may be jumping into a bucket of worms, keep smiling, but I have a
book that has a huge index of names starting from the 1600s to 1700s of
people that married or were of Indian blood. If you are looking to link
your family to the South Carolina Tribes, I will do lookups for you.

I request, please only two surnames per person,

Give surnames,
first name of person or persons.
dates when person lived,
tribe if known.
Area in SC---- if known
plus any other information you think would be helpful.

The book contains information from births, deaths, tribe and history of
marriages. Family, children's names, deeds of land, rivers, towns, areas,
etc. Court appearences,

this book is over 500 pages and is packed with information on the South
Carolina indians, traders and other ethnic connections.

I cannot promise miracles, but I do know that many, many people, such as
traders with the Indians and early settlers of South Carolina married into
the Indian tribes. Some where taken as slaves on both sides. This
includes, black, white, Indian, etc.

In South Carolina, the term Mulatto---- means their mother was of Indian
blood --- not of the black race, interesting to say the least.
If they were of the black race a different term was used.

I just bought this book from a dealer in Tennessee and it's like full of
genealogy.

So, please let me know if you would like a lookup for your family if you
have heard your are of Indian descent through South Carolina tribes.

I will do my best to help you. It's on a first come, first serve request.
I cannot promise a quick reply, as I do many look-ups for genealogy for union
and Fairfield Country also on families.

I do this in my spare time which is very slight, working 40 hrs a week and
running a family plus outside interests. I can say this. I have always
written everyone back that has requested lookups. It may take a week or two,
but I will do this for you.

Sincerely,-----with God's blessings to you and yours
Melinda
