I'm trying to get a total number of men who served in the Civil War from
SC. This is for my South Carolina in the Civil War web site which is at

http://members.aol.com/superstore/sccd.htm

From the book, Broken Promises, we have an approximate number of 23,000
killed from SC, of which about 18,000 are known and listed.

Foxe's Regimental losses has the following statements:

SOUTH CAROLINA -- 33 regiments, and 2 battalions of infantry; 7 regiments
and 1 battalion of cavalry; 1 regiment, and 1 battalion of heavy
artillery; and 28 batteries of light artillery.

and again...

Their military population in 1861 was:

Alabama	99,967 Louisiana	83,456 Tennessee	159,353
Arkansas	65,231 Mississippi	70,295 Texas	92,145
Florida	15,739 North
Carolina	115,369 Virginia	196,587
Georgia	111,005 South
Carolina	55,046 Total(*)	1,064,193

This "military population" is a derived number based on the number of men
between 18 and 50, allowing for a percentage being unfit for service.

and again...

From the preceding figures it appears that South Carolina lost in killed
over 23 per cent. of her entire military population; and that North
Carolina lost over 17 per cent. Add to this the loss by disease, and the
maimed or crippled for life...

Extrapolating from all this, I estimate that 100,000 men from SC saw
service during the Civil War and 23% or about 23,000 were killed.

Now the question...

Does anyone have a more definitive number, or know of a work that
addresses this issue?

Thanks
John Rigdon
