Subject: Re: South Carolina From: Lorna Hibbs Date: February 21, 1998 I thank you!! I don't really see how you have time to anything...you post so many wonderful posts on the SCROOTS list. And I wouldn't expect you to do research for hire. But I appreciate your laying the groundrules up front. I've done research now for abouat 25-30 years. I've odne research on a professional basis much of that time,, but have had to quit that due to the problems with my parent's health and raising my family. However, I still work on my own and my husband's genealogy. First a bit of background. My ancestor Elizabeth BULLARD, b/ 1807 in SC according to the 1850 Census of Dekalb Co., AL. She's been an enigma. Never found listed with a husband, always as head of household. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, near Keener, Etowah Co., AL, formerly DeKalb Co., AL. I remember seeing a tombstone next to her with the name Robert on it. My ggrandfather said that the name Robert BULLARD was familiar to him, and that a Robert was the first one in here. He did not say where "here" was. My mother researched this and did interviews with the older folks back in the 60's. She could never determine who Elizabeths Husband was or if her surname was BULLARD or what. Recently, I picked it up again. I decided that since she was b/ in 1807 in SC I shoudl do some census. I found one Gadi BULLARD in Marlboro Co., SC in 1800, age 16-26 with 1 female in the household age 16-26. I searched other census, and have not been able to locate him. I searched the only Marlboro Co., SC books I oculd find and found in one where in 1799 he was in a lawsuit of some sort, sued by John PEVLAN. He lost and had to pay $33 plus court cost. That is the full extent of SC information I have on him. Now, the reason he stuck out to me. A frien dof mine here descends from a man named Allen AVERY who had a store here in the same area where Elizabeth BULLARD lived. In the store account book for the years 1836-1838 are found 2 listings for Gadi BULLARD. The 1838 listing shows his account was paid by settlement by David BULLARD. There is also a listing for an "Alexandriar" BULLARD, aboaut the same time. The name GADI is uncommon, to say the least. The time frame would fit for it to have been the same Gadi BULLARD as the one in SC in 1800. I believe that there is some relationship between Gadi and my Elizabeth. I've found other evidence that indicates the possibility that Elizabeth was an UPTON, which family was also in SC, but in Pendleton Dist. (George Washington UPTON married Charity Burroughs in Pendleton Dist in 1798 I believe it was, and his descendants are in this area.) Back to Gadi in Marlboro Co., SC. I found in 1783 in Marlboro Co., there was one Joel BULLARD who d/ and a George BULLARD was authorized to see to the appraisement of his land in Marion Co. In Marion Co., SC there is a family of BULLARD's who appear to descend from a Robert BULLARD who was one of 3 immigrant brothers who came in Massachusetts early. I have corresponded with a woman whodescends from one of the Robert BULLARD's in Marion Co., SC. Anyway, my problem is finding anything on Gadi BULLARD, other than what I have found. Another problem is establishing any kind of tie between him and my Elizabeth. And, of course, I need to try to find out if this Joel BULLARD in Marlboro Co in 1783 could possibly be the father of Gadi, and if they do, indeed, tie in with the BULLARD family in the neighboring county of Marion. My Elizabeth had one son named Robert b./ 1828 SC. Others were David b/ 1823 , SC, Henry Thomas b/ 1836 in Keener, Dekalab Co., AL ,John Franklin BULLARD b/ 1834, in AL & James A.S.C. b/ 1840, in AL, with Robert being the second son. So they must have moved from SC between 1818 & 1836. But I find absolutely nothing on them until they show up here. I have ordered some Dekalb co., AL films to see if I can find anything at all on them. I've searched Dekalb Co., many times before, but never on the BULLARd family, but neither do I remember ever seeing anything on the BULLARD Family, else I would have copied it. I am in a quandry as to how to search Marlboro co. I've been unable to find many printed books locally. Many of the SC films are not availble for order at the Family History Center. I've posted queries on the Marlboro USGENWEB page. Can you offer any suggestions of any kind. Since I have the county Court Book and page number of the findal decree on the lawsuit Gadi lost, do you think that I could write the Marlboro County Court house and get anything? I just am lost. The sources I have access to are so few in this case. Thanks so much! I appreciate any help you can offer.
