Subject: Re: Slaves in the Family From: john c ottinger Date: May 23, 1998 I'm starting to notice posts about this book on various lists as though it were a genealogical chronicle with numerous surnames in it. I've read it, and it isn't. It is basically an attempt by one man to come to terms with the fact that his family owned and profited from slaves, and to explore just what this meant. He tracks down and talks with descendants of both his white ancestors and the slaves, and a few people that are descendants of white-black unions. It is an honest and readable book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this subject, and in the early slave owning culture of the Charleston area. But, unless you are related to the Ball family, don't expect to find a bunch of connections in it.
