Hello,
I am reading a fascinating book "Slaves in the Family" by Richard Ball.  It is
about a man who is descended from one of the largest slave-holding families in
South Carolina who tracks down descendants of the slaves his family owned.  I
was wondering,  were slave owners required by the state to keep any type of
record on slaves they owned and if so, what kinds of records?  
Just curious!
