(Editor's Note: Back in early Spring, 1982, I wrote to Rev. Harry E. Wright,
Minister of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Shiloh, in Sumter County, S.C. and
asked him for information on the history of his church that appears to be
located near or on land that once belonged to our Benjamin Lavender. He very
kindly brought the matter up during one of his quarterly meetings of the Church
Administrative Board and informed me that 3 members were eager to help. The
members are Mr. LeRoy Green, Mr. Jimmy Myers and Mrs. Edith Myers who submitted
the following with a promise of more to come.)

Letter from Albert D. Betts, Pastor of the Methodist Church, P. 0. Box 125,
Travelers Rest, S.C. to Hon. Frank A. McLeod, Sumter, S.C. Dated April 6, 1950:

My Dear McLoed: -- Responding to your request concerning the history of Shiloh
Methodist Church in the eastern part of Sumter County, I find that Lynchburg
Circuit with 12 churches appears in November, 1855. Rev. Lewis A. Johnson is
pastor. It is in Georgetown District (set up that year) with Rev. Charles Betts
as presiding elder. The names of the churches are not given. But in the
missionary reports to the S.C. conference of 1850, the name of Shiloh Sunday
School appears with a contribution for missions. This is the first mention of
Shiloh Church by name, tho it must have been organized several years previously.
Our Conference Minutes did not begin reporting by local churches until about 70
years ago.

No doubt the Shiloh folks have fairly good records of their church after the
Confederate War.
