I don't own stock in Broderbund but they have Family Tree Maker which is an
excellent program that does all of these things you are asking about quickly and
easily.  It has a feature which puts everything into book format and provides
you with an index.  You can even include photos.  I consider FTM to be an
excellent genealogy program.  It has a few warts but I would suggest you take a
close look at it.  If you get FTM, make sure you get the latest version (Version
5.0).
