MIDDLETON, JAMES. (p. 284): He was the only son of his parents, John
Middleton and Sarah Goodby Middleton of St. James - Goose Creek Parish,
Charleston District, and was born 1760 (and not 1770 as was erroneously
approximated in Vol. V in the caption). (2) References for his
Revolutionary War service: (a) Revolutonary War Records in South Carolina
Archives AA52 15-A, Acct No. 161-T, lists James Middleton as a Lieutenant
in Col. Anderson's Company, South Carolina Militia. The same service is
also reflected in Salley's Stub Entries to Indents, S.C. Revolutionary War
records, Book R-T, page 231, reading "Issued 24th June, 1785, to Mr. James
Middleton for thirty-four pounds, seventeen shillings, sterling, for
military duty as lieutenant, as per account audited." (b) In Sarah Sullivan
Ervin's book "South Carolina in the Revolution", page 120, James Middleton
is listed as a Revolutionary Soldier in S.C., and who it is stated, moved
to Georgia. (3) Bryan County Superior Court minutes show he was drawn as a
juror there in 1797. State militia records show he was commissioned as a
Captain in the McIntosh County militia, Nov. 16, 1799 (name shown in
commission as "James Middleton, Gentleman"). These happenings show he moved
From South Carolina to Georgia between 1795 (when his first child was born
in S.C.) and 1797, and that he moved from Bryan to McIntosh County between
1797 and Nov. 1799. He was living in Wayne County in the time of the 1807
land lottery, and was listed as a registrant living in the 3rd land
district of Wayne. In that lottery he drew a land lot in Wilkinson County.
(Thanks are due Mrs. Beth Engel of St. Simons Island, a descendant, for the
above data respecting the parentage and war service of James Middleton.).

MIDDLETON, JAMES - VOL.V: (1) The birth and death dates for the children of
James and Mary Owens (Owings) Middleton are: Alexander Goodby, born
ca.1796, died April 30, 1858; Robert, born May 15, 1798, died June 27,
1856; William, born February 13, 1801, died September 3, 1871; James, born
July 10, 1803, died August 18, 1874; and Mary Ann, born April 10, 1810,
died December 23, 1893. (2) According to findings by Mrs, Beth Engel, a
descendant of James Middleton who has researched this family extensively,
there is no information on the daughter, Sarah, although she thinks it is
likely that the Sarah Middleton who married John McGowan January 5, 1819 at
Midway Church is this Sarah (Midway Congregational Church Records, p. 104).
(3) Jean Adams (Mrs. Randall) Walker of Jesup, Georgia became the first
descendant of James Middleton, R.S. to be admitted on his service into the
Daughters of the American Revolution. She was admitted October 14, 1978.
Her National Number is 632446. She is a member of the John Floyd Chapter,
D.A.R. She descends through the son Alexander Goodby Middleton and his son
William Spencer Middleton who was her great-grandfather.

MIDDLETON, WILLIAM D. - VOL.VIII: (1) The correct birthdate of the son,
George Haines, should be 4/13/1883. (2) The son, Robert Clester, is out of
order. As can be seen from his birthdate, he should have been listed as the
second child. (3) The third marriage of the subject to Mrs. Margaret
Sallens took place on December 19, 1911, not 1905 as stated.
