MIDDLETON, STEPHEN S.	1825-1883 APPLING

Stephen S. Middleton was born Sept. 14, 1825, in Georgia, believed to be a
son of Samuel Middleton of Emanuel County; both his parents were born in
North Carolina according to the 1880 census. He came to Appling County a
young single man and was married there and spent the remainder of his life
there. He was married in 1850 to Miriam Samantha Leggett, born in Appling
County, Jan. 14, 1831, daughter of Benjamin Leggett (Vol. IV). They had
fifteen children:

1 . Joshua S.	b. 1850,	m. Sophronia F. Weatherby, dau. of Isaac, Jan. 4,
1874.

8. Sarah	b. 1858,	unidentified.
9. Miriam	b. 1859,	m. Henry Overstreet, Jan. 31, 1883.
10. Beauregard	b. 1861,	m. Nancy Eason.
11. Flora E.	b. 1862,	m. Abraham M. Eason, July 17,1876.

14. Susan L.	b. 1866,	m. John U. Tippins, June 18, 1884.
15. James Hobbs	b. 1869,	m. Julia Collins.

Note by Compiler: The 1850 census of Appling shows Mr. Middleton as single,
The 1860 census shows him and his wife with the first eight children and
ages as shown above. Since the censuses of 1850 and 1860 were taken as of
June 30th, it is evident that he married after June 30, 1850. In the
absence of more exact dates from the old family Bible, or other sources,
census dates are invariably used. None of the birth-years shown above for
the first eight, correspond with those of later censuses which usually
shows them one or two years younger.
Mr. Middleton was a merchant in the 1850 census. He lived in the eastern
part of Appling County where he came to be a large landowner. He died Dec.
9, 1883, and his widow died Jan. 9, 1914. They were buried in Bethel
Methodist Church cemetery. He served three months in the Confederate Army;
enlisted in Co. "A", 29th Georgia Infantry
Regiment and was elected 4th corporal. He was discharged for disability,
Dec. 25, 1861. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the Appling County militia,
583rd district, 1845-1850.
