Note by Compiler: The 1850 census of Appling shows Mr. Middleton as single, The 1860 census shows him and his wife with the first eight children and ages as shown above. Since the censuses of 1850 and 1860 were taken as of June 30th, it is evident that he married after June 30, 1850. In the absence of more exact dates from the old family Bible, or other sources, census dates are invariably used. None of the birth-years shown above for the first eight, correspond with those of later censuses which usually shows them one or two years younger. Mr. Middleton was a merchant in the 1850 census. He lived in the eastern part of Appling County where he came to be a large landowner. He died Dec. 9, 1883, and his widow died Jan. 9, 1914. They were buried in Bethel Methodist Church cemetery.
