Subject: Re: Re: SCROOTS-D Digest V00 #116 From: Janet Jilote Date: March 20, 2000 Yolanda, With regards to finding neighbors on the Census Records: I located my information on microfilm. I go to the page the person is located and check the names of neighbors on the pages before and after his listing. When copying the info I ususally print out the full page. I went several months once without realizing that I had two sets of gg-grandparents living nextdoor to one another! So, now I examine and re-examine the census info. Depending of the date of the census, some of the indexes have the people listed in the order they appeared on the census (house to house), such as the 1790 SC Census. There are also some index books with a list of alphabetized names and another with the names as they were taken house to house (I can't swear to this, but think it was 1840 Census). But I always go to the film. I don't trust the transcriptions of many people, several whom could not read the old script handwriting. I have found many names misspelled or not even listed in indexes. There are times when I actually go to a (microfilmed) neighborhood when a family member is on a census and look page to page at the names. Sometimes my eye will spot something my mind was not looking for. Sometimes I just copy pages from the census index books for particular surnames, and then compare page #'s that the families are listed on to see how close these families were living together. Especially, if I only have a surname and no given names to go on... I see if there were any families with related surname living near each other. I often find in-laws lived near one another at one given time or another. Right now I have a lead on a CAMPBELL family of which I only had the gg-grandparent of Anne Campbell BEARD. I found that she and her husband lived nextdoor to what maybe her brother. Then I started looking for naming patterns.... any clues. Next, I search the census records that may have included both children. And with two siblings names and birthdates I can look for birth records, church records and hopefully find parents names. I hope I answered your question. Where do you get your census info from? And if I can help in any other way please let me know.
