Bates; Bryant, Harvey, Vandiver (c. 1871 KKK activity) From: GKinard Date: March 11, 1998 Today I spent some time transcribing into my notes excerpts from: Testimony taken by U.S. CONGRESS JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE to inquire into THE CONDITION OF AFFAIRS IN THE LATE INSURRECTIONARY STATES: SOUTH CAROLINA Volume I This testimony, which involved Spartanburg citizens recollections of KKK activity in 1871, mentioned a General Bates several times. Can anyone tell me who is was? Confederate or Union? I am curious to know how he fits into this picture. Also, if anyone out there is kin to Reuben Briant/Bryant (Jr.), the Harveys or the Vandivers of the Spartanburg area, I'll be glad to share my typed copy w/them.
