Subject: SC Townships & Districts From: URQ5 Date: April 20, 1998 In an attempt to divert attention from the recent unpleasantness on the list, I'm posting this information in hopes some of you will find it helpful. In 1730, eight townships were established in SC. They were all within 60 miles of the coast since there were few inhabitants farther inland. Note that all eight townships were established around SC's extensive river system since that was the natural pattern for settlement. Also, the areas NOT included in the eight townships were soon referred to as "upstate" -- a term we still use today in defining general areas of SC (i.e. "coastal," "midlands," "upstate," etc). 1. Williamsburg Township (Black River, Kingstree area) 2. Purrysburg Township (Savannah River, Aiken/Augusta area) 3. Saxe- Gotha Township (Congaree River, Columbia, lower Richland area) 4. Orangeburg/ Orangeburgh Township (N. Edisto river, mid- state area) 5. Amelia Township (Congaree River/Wateree River junction, Camden/Sumter area) 6. Fredericksburg Township (Wateree River, above Amelia Township) 7. Queensboro Township (Pee Dee River, Cheraw area) 8. Kingston Township (Waccamaw River, Conway area) In 1739 the following Circuit Court Districts were established: 1. Cherokee District 2. Ninety- Six District 3. Camden District 4. Cheraw District 5. Georgetown District 6. Orangeburg/ Orangeburgh District 7. Charleston District 8. Beaufort District Don't be a lurker. If you've come across information about SC history & SC families that might help list members, POST IT. Happy hunting and good health to you.
