Subject: SC METHODISTS in DANGER--More questions From: ELIZABETH RUSSO Date: November 02, 1998 Emma and everyone who has generously responded to my help requests- Thank you for the info! More questions for the list: During the Revolutionary War Wesley supported England, so in many colonies it > was dangerous to be a Methodist. Perhaps this explains John E.' writings of the fighting occuring in the early Charlestonian days of Methodists. I have not found my direct ancestors among the Patriots' Index and was curious as to whether they sat out as pacifists, or were loyal to the Crown. What other sources would help me find out? On Christmas Eve of 1784, 60 American Methodist preachers met in Baltimore, Maryland to form the Methodist Episcopal Church. My DUBOIS were in St. Thomas/St. Denis parish records as late as 1778, and were probably among the first members of the BETHEL Methodist Church in Charleston in 1798. So, the question is, in the twenty years in between, where, when, and how did they evolve into Methodists? Any ideas?
