Everyone on this list needs to know of the State History Day at the SC
Archives on October 27, 1998 with the theme: "Old Times There Are Not
Forgotten: South Carolina and the Civil War."

The keynote speaker will be Tony Horwitz, Pulitzer Prize winning author
of Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil
War. Also J. Tracy Powers, author of Lee's Miserables: Life in the
Army of Northern Virginia from the Wilderness to Appomattox, will talk
about God and General Lee, not necessarily in that order; John Hammond
Moore, author of Columbia and Richland County: A South Carolina
Community, discusses life on the homefront; and John Bentley Mays'
topic, Power in the Blood: Land, Memory, and a Southern Family should
need no further description. Additionally, Patrick McCawley gives
advice on tracing Confederate ancestors, Alexia Helsley unveils a new
archives packet for teachers on South Carolina's secession story, and
Charles Lesser gives a guided tour and lecture centering around the
actual displayed secession document (check out the familiar surnames on
the document).

All this plus lunch is yours for $25. Register by October 20 by calling
Kathy Johnson at 803-896-6177 or [email protected]. Access the
archives web page at www.state.sc.us/scdah/homepage.htm for more
information.

Yes, re-enactors will be there in a typical encampment to give authentic
flavor.
A beautiful and brand new archives building must be seen if you haven't
already.

Terry Helsley
