Subject: SC History at the State Archives From: Expressservice Date: September 28, 1998 Everyone on this list needs to know of the State History Day at the SC Archives on October 27, 1998 with the theme: "Old Times There Are Not Forgotten: South Carolina and the Civil War." The keynote speaker will be Tony Horwitz, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War. Also J. Tracy Powers, author of Lee's Miserables: Life in the Army of Northern Virginia from the Wilderness to Appomattox, will talk about God and General Lee, not necessarily in that order; John Hammond Moore, author of Columbia and Richland County: A South Carolina Community, discusses life on the homefront; and John Bentley Mays' topic, Power in the Blood: Land, Memory, and a Southern Family should need no further description. Additionally, Patrick McCawley gives advice on tracing Confederate ancestors, Alexia Helsley unveils a new archives packet for teachers on South Carolina's secession story, and Charles Lesser gives a guided tour and lecture centering around the actual displayed secession document (check out the familiar surnames on the document).
