The SC Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society has chapters in
20 states.
The SC Society was chartered to provide a channel for research.
Practically every African-American n the US has some SC connection.
 A national charter allows SC blacks use of SC Generalogical Society's
research of white slave owers can help blacks trace their ancestry at
least back to antebellum times. But that name may not always be the key.
Only 15 percent of freed slaves took their owner's surnames. The biggest
barrier in African-American research is getting past the 1870 US census.
