Boujour a tous,

I had my mailbox overwhelmed by forwards of this Gaillard's List kindly
posted by S. Coker on SCROOTS.

A friend has suggested the following names from the above list as
>wrongfully included. ...
>person, the full name being Fleury de la Plaine, de Saussure as not being
>strictly French Huguenots, but Swiss who came over with Pury as late as 1733.

So everyone laughing, "you are not a real Huguenot"..

Being so "agressed", and my attorney-at-law being presently hired by your
President, I will try to argument by myself.

What is a "strictly French Huguenot"

This word HUGUENOT was in use far before your ancestors came to America,
it is a french word, from french speaking Geneva, coming from the
German-Swiss "Edgnossen", and the dictionnary says:

"nickname given by catholics to calvinist protestants in France in
16-18th centuries."

By no doubt, Antoine de SAUSSURE was a Huguenot! More on him later..

Interesting enough to note that this insult ("huguenot!") became later a
title of glory..

Much later on, General Wilmott G. de SAUSSURE founded with Daniel RAVENEL
the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. As a wise first president, he
edicted rules for membership that would allow him to be a member!!

----------------------------------------------------- cf Steve's previous post

The Constitution further provides that the membership be as follows:

Firstly. All descendants in the direct male or female lines of the Huguenot
families which emigrated to America prior to the promulgation of the Edict of
Toleration, November 28th, 1787.

-- Henri de SAUSSURE (immigrant to SC) is a descendant in the direct male
line of the Huguenot Antoine de SAUSSURE, who escaped jail and religious
persecution in LORRAINE ca1560 --

Secondly. Representatives of other French families, whose profession of the
Protestant faith is anterior to the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration,
November 28th, 1787.

---------------------------------------------------------

So, even by american standards, Henri de Saussure was a true Huguenot,
simply of much ancient origin than the others. Remember that religious
persecutions began far before the revocation of the Edit de Nantes!

Funny enough, when I wanted, years ago to get a french passport (I have
the swiss one), I went before a justice court that stated thatI had
proven my direct male descendance from Antoine de SAUSSURE, escaped for
religious persecution 500 years ago, an thus I could recover a French
passport.
