Revolutionary War Veteran - Drummer & Fifer - Captain George Slaughter's
Company, 8th Virginia Regiment of Foot, commanded by Colonel Bowman.  His
name appears on a company muster roll for April 1777, dated 17 May 1777,
which shows that he was appointed 26 January (year not indicated).  This
muster roll bears the remarks, "In the Marine Service 10th May."
((Department of the Army, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C.)) -
Enlisted in Virginia 0n 26 January 1777.  Later, removed to South
Carolina for the remainder of his life. Samuel West owned about 2,000
acres of land.  It was the land on which they found Haile Gold Mine.  He
was also an owner of many slaves.  He joined the Revolution at the age of
18.  His wife, Hannah Katherine Kershaw, was a relative of the
Revolutionary War hero, Colonel Joseph Kershaw, for whom the county was
later named.
