About sixty-five families with the name of Green were in South Carolina in
the 1790 Federal Census. Only one spelled it Greene. Eight of the 65
families lived in the Winton District which included parts of Aiken County
which was not officially created until I believe around 1870. The Census
listed their names as being Daniel, Drury, Elizabeth, Elkanah, Grace, John,
and two Williams. My William Green thought to have been born in NC in
1743-45, married a Phereby, maiden name unknown and settled in the Winton
District, later Barnwell District, in the 1780s. It is possibly that he may
have been descended from an Amos Greene from RI. However, this is all
speculation at this time. I have no clues to his parents name. There is a
William Green mentioned in "The First Families of Aiken" by John Rigdon. I
have not seen the book but believe this is my William Green as he had land
and interests in that area as proven by Barnwell County Court House records.
Hope this helps somewhat. Also, again, does anyone out there have any
knowledge of my William Green or other Greens mentioned above. Many thanks.
