So what's a RootsWeb, anyway?

The RootsWeb project has two missions:

1. To make large volumes of data available to the online genealogical community
at minimal cost.

2. To provide support services to online genealogical activities such as USENET
newsgroup moderation, mailing list maintenance, surname list generation, etc.

RootsWeb's own genealogy runs back more than a decade to the days of net.roots.
RootsWeb folks have been involved since the early days of ROOTS-L and the Roots
Surname List, and more recently were among the founders of the RAND Genealogy
Club. We created the RootsWeb site to continue to support the genealogical
community as the needs of the community outstripped the ability of RAND and
other organizations to host the genealogical community on a guest basis.

Rootsweb Mailing Lists

A few of the forums available at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~maillist

GENTIPS-L -- A mailing list for anyone who has an interest in genealogy. This
list hopes to provide tips about obtaining genealogy records and is useful for
both beginning genealogists and experts. No geographical boundaries apply. In
addition, this list is for any topic of genealogical value and postings from
general history to a listing of state vital records office addresses are
welcome.

HOMESPUN-L -- A mailing list for those who want to have a bit of fun
reminiscing. Subscribers are welcome to share memories, traditions, poems,
humor, stories, recipes, folklore and home remedies.

NEW-GEN-URL-L -- A mailing list for the posting of information on
genealogy-related web sites in order to save researchers time in locating new
web sites and determining the location of significant web resources. Information
on web sites may be posted to the list even if the sites are not new. Postings
should contain your title, full name and email address; the URL (address) of the
site; and a brief description of the contents of the site. You may also include
a surname list if the site is a personal web site.

RESEARCH-HOWTO-L -- A mailing list for those who are just getting started in
genealogy research and those who are not novices but need information on where
to go when "dead ends" are encountered. This list will deal with such things as
courts' records, other official documents, ships' logs, genealogy societies,
on-line databases, web Pages, mailing lists, historical societies, libraries
dedicated to genealogy, locations of LDS Genealogy Centers, and any other
subjects that arise in the discussion of Genealogy Tips, Tricks, Methods,
Techniques, etc. Surname searches or any other specific ancestor searches are
not an appropriate topic for this list.

ROLL-CALL-L -- A mailing list for the posting of "roll calls" (lists) of the
surnames you are researching so that others can determine if there is a common
interest.

SURNAME-QUERY-L -- A mailing list for users to send queries on specific surname
searches. If a mailing list already exists for a particular surname, subscribers
will let the user know the name of the list, how to subscribe, etc. If a list
doesn't exist, subscribers will be encouraged to help out with pertinent
information. If there are sufficient posts for a particular surname and a new
list is justified, users will be asked to volunteer to start and maintain a new
list. If there are no user volunteers, one of the "old timers" will request that
RootsWeb allow the new list with the requestor as the list owner. You must be a
subscriber to post to the list and posting instructions will be provided when
you subscribe.
