Robertson was born on November 6, 1815 in South Carolina, possibly in Barnwell County. Census records indicate his parents were also born in South Carolina, but their names are unknown. He is believed to have moved to the Florida Territory with his parents, but the place and the year is unknown. John W. was in Hamilton County by 1837 where he enlisted in Captain Daniel Bell's Company, Florida Volunteers during the Florida Indian Wars. John W. Robertson and Sarah Ann Whitehurst were married in Hamilton County, Florida on October 11, 183 8. Sarah Ann was the daughter of Daniel S. and Jincy (Fletcher) Whitehurst and granddaughter of Simon Whitehurst (Vol.V). She was born on November 10, 1821, probably in Appling County, Georgia, Her pension file includes a signed affidavit by her brother Berrian D. Whitehurst, stating that he was present at the marriage ceremony. Based on receipts for land purchased, John W. and Sarah Ann left Hamilton County in the early 1840's and moved into northern Suwannee County (Columbia County at the time) near the Suwannee River in the Fort Union area. John W. voted in Florida's first election in 1845 in the Columbia precinct, He later moved to the southeastern part of Suwannee County and his post office address at the time of his death was Little River. He was a farmer and stockman. According to a biography of his son-in-law, Robert F. Rogers, John W. served in the Confederate Amry, but no proof has been found of such service. Robertson died on July 22, 1881 and is buried in the Little River Cemetery located about 12 miles southeast of Live Oak, east off county road # 49. Near his headstone are headstones of his daughter, Clifford R. Robertson, wife of John Robertson, and of a granddaughter, Mittie Boler. After John W.'s death, Sarah Ann (Whitehurst) Robertson returned to live on land owned in the northern part of the county. She died on August 13, 1896 and is buried in the Rosemary Baptist Cemetery located on county road # 249, about two miles from the Suwannee River, near where she resided.
