Robert Winter Lavender was the youngest son of Benjamin and Maryann Lavender of
Sumter District, S.C. According to family records and family Bible records, he
was born September 14, 1819, in Shiloh Community, Sumter District, S.C. He moved
to Leon County, Florida ca 1840-49 and lived with his brother, Littleton Capel
Lavender. On the 1850 census records of Leon County, both are shown working as
"millers." Littleton Capel was head of household, and no others lived with them,
meaning that Robert Winter was not married at that time. The same family records
show that Robert Winter married Jachanie Wright Barco on Oct. 28, 1852. We have
not found the documents for the date and her full name as yet, or the place of
marriage. We know from census records that she was born in North Carolina.

On 1870 census records, Robert Winter was in Wakulla County, in Florida, listed
as a farmer. His wife was on the census as Jachami, along with five children:
Martha Jane, 16; Edmond B, 15; John L., 11; Josephine, 9; Ida, 4. Robert Winter
Lavender died January 2, 1880. The 1880 census record of Wakulla Co., Fla. shows
J. Lavender, evidently for Jachanie or Jachami, with 3 children: Jno. L.,
Josephine, and Ida M. This census was taken June 8 & 9, 1880, a few months after
Robert Winter died. Jachanie died October 10, 1896. She and Robert Winter
Lavender are buried in Sutton Cemetery, Wakulla Co., Fla. This cemetery was
originally known as "Lavender Cemetery."
