If anyone is interested in information dealing with the military exploits
of some of our kinfolks, here is information I have recently found
concerning one of my relatives. For those not familiar with the location
of the Westville that is mentioned here, it is in Kershaw County.
Richmond Hobson Hilton was a 2xg/g'son of James Hilton, a veteran of the
Revolutionary War, and a 3xg/g'son of Richard Hilton, who fought in the
Cherokee-Indian Wars....................Bill

A note in the section of information concerning recipients of the
Congressional Medal Of Honor states: "Born in 1898 just 6 months after
Richmond Hobson's heroic actions during the Spanish-American War,
Richmond Hobson HILTON received the Medal Of Honor during World War I,
the only name-sake of a Medal Of Honor hero to also receive the Medal Of
Honor".
His citation reads:
"The President of the United States in the name of The Congress takes
pleasure in presenting the Medal Of Honor to HILTON, RICHMOND HOBSON.
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company M, 118th Infantry,
30th Division. Place and date: At Brancourt, France, 11 October 1918.
Entered service at: Westville, S.C. Born: 8 October 1898, Westville,
S.C. G.O.: 16, W.D., 1919.
CITATION:
While Sgt. Hilton's company was advancing through the village of
Brancourt it was held up by intense enfilading fire from a machinegun.
Discovering that this fire came from a machinegun nest among shell holes
at the edge of the town, Sgt. Hilton, accompanied by a few other
soldiers, but well in advance of them, pressed on toward this position,
firing with his rifle until his ammunition was exhausted, and then with
his pistol, killing 6 of the enemy and capturing 10. In the course of
this daring exploit he received a wound from a bursting shell, which
resulted in the loss of his arm."
