Subject: Richland County, SC records From: barry hedden Date: February 04, 1998 I would love to receive a little input from someone who has a better understanding of how record keeping is done in Richland County, SC (Columbia). I can document that my paternal grandparents are buried side-by-side in a cemetery in Columbia. They both died in Columbia in the 1940's, which would supposedly be recent enough for death certificates and estate papers to be held at the county level, rather than at the state archive level. And they had lived in Columbia for a number of years prior to their deaths. In spite of that, however, the Clerk of Court's office informs me they have no record at all of either individual. Even if both died intestate, it seems to me that by the 1940's there should have been death certificates and some kind of estate papers.
