Subject: Re: Research in Charleston--the Insider's Guide From: Pilgrimpjm Date: January 24, 2000 Hi Elizabeth, As a matter of fact, the Charleston County Public Library (and their South Carolina Room) still charge .10 per copy! Places like Office Max and Office Depot charge .05 each - however, the books in the SC Room are not available for check-out, so if you find something interesting there, it will cost you a dime per copy. Some of the books located in the SC Room are also available for check-out in the main part of the library. Then you will have to find someone local who can check them out for you to copy at the nickel places! I'll be glad to help if I can. I have a copy of an eighteen page booklet, published by the SC Room at the Library, entitled "Guidelines and Suggestions for Genealogical Research in the Charleston County Public Library" that I thought you might find helpful. If you'll tell me where to mail it, I'll get this off to you ASAP. The Historical Society charges .25 per copy for members only. Nonmembers pay a fee ($5.00 per visit) to get in the door - then .35 per copy. However, they do accept checks (though I am not sure about out-of-town checks). I'll call tomorrow and see, also I'll check whether or not they take 'plastic.' This weekend, while riding around downtown, I noticed a building on King Street that looks interesting. It's the Charleston Library Society - a private library which allows nonmembers access to their collection for a fee - much like the Historical Society. I don't know any particulars as yet, but I will look into it. I plan to visit there within the next couple of weeks, so I can send you the latest prices, etc. after my visit. I look forward to seeing the group when you get into town! Let me know if I can do anything else to help. Pamela Rhett Molzan << Thank you everyone for your hints. Keep 'em coming. Especially about copy costs, as I'm seeing costs running from .25 and up. Doesn't anyone charge 10 cents a page outside of D.C. anymore?
