Rentz was born Dec. 20, 1845, in Lowndes (now Echols) County, youngest son of Samuel Rentz (Vol. 1). He was married in Lowndes County in 1869 to Martha Carter, born 1849, daughter of Isaac Carter (Vol. III), and to them were born five children: 1. Lyman U. b. June 1, 1870, m. Annie Stran. 2. Ida b. July 1874, m. Andrew T. Dasher. 3. Eff ie b. Oct. 15, 1875, m. Smith M. Carter. 4. Levin H. b. Aug. 5,1878, m. Effie Marshall, dau. of John. 5. Benj. Franklin b. Dec. 4,1886, m. Lilla Corbitt, dau. of Tiner. John H. Rentz lived on the Statenville-Howell public road in Echols County, on the west side of the Alapaha River. He died there July 18, 1905; his wife died Dec. 3, 1910. They were buried at Wayfare Church. The son, B. F. Rentz acquired the homeplace and property of his father, and lived there until his death in 1944, and is now owned and occupied by a grandson, J. L. Rentz. The son, Lyman U. Rentz became a prominent medical doctor and practiced and lived at DuPont, Milltown (now Lakeland) and Ray City; and died at Ray City, Aug. 9, 1912. John H. Rentz enlisted as a private March 4, 1862, in Co. "G", 5oth Georgia Regiment, C.S.A.,and served through the war. NOTE: Echols county with its small population, never had enough men to form a company during the Civil War, and as a result all of its men who served were in companies from other counties. Thus, Mr. Rentz and his brothers Peter and William served in a company from Quitman County which was also a small population county. Six others from Echols were in the same company. RENTZ, SIMON 1765-1820 BARNWELL DIST. S.C. Simon Rentz though he lived,and died in South Carolina, has many descendants who live in "Wiregrass Georgia," particularly those of his son, Samuel (Vol. D. Simon Rentz was born about 1765 in old Orangeburg Dist., S.C., later Barnwell District, a son of George and Catherine Rentz. George died before 1785 as his widow died testate that year. Her will dated June 13, 1785, was probated Aug. 6, 1785, and among other uequests she gave to her sons Peter and Simon Rentz 200 acres of her land, lying on Savannah Creek in what was then Colleton county. Mrs. Catherine Rentz furnished supplies to the South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War. Simon Rentz's wife was named Mary but her maiden name is unknown. Simon and Mary had the followig children (named in his will): 1 . Charles b. 1788, m. Anna Catherine Bamberg, dau. of John G. 2. Molsy b. 1791, m. Graham Kinard. Was dead in 1820. No issue. 3. George b. 178-, m. (unknown). 4. Peter b. 179-, m. (unknown). 5. Margaret b. 1794, m. Jacob Hughes (Vol. 1). 6. Samuel (Vol 1) b. 1796, m. Elizabeth Rice, dau. of John. 7. Stephen b. 179-, died single before 1825. 8. Olive b. 179-, m. Joseph Peters. 9. Susannah b. 1800, m. Henry Kinlock Chitty. Dead in 1825; no issue. 10. Anna b. 180-, m. Isaac Kinard. 11. Keziah b. 180-, died single before 1825. 12. Chas. Frederick b. 1808, m. (unknown). (Note: Due to absence of birthdates of birth-years it is imossible to list the foregoing children in their order. Birthyears of only four or five definitely known.) The will of Simon Rentz was dated April 3,1815, and was probated in Barnwell Ordinary's office April 28, 1820. The will names the above children. Soon after the death of his widow Mary in 1825, a proceeding was filed Dec. 14, 1825, in Barnwell Court of Ordinary, respecting her heirs and settlement of her estate as well as that of her husband; and the petition discloses that Mrs. Chitty was dead and left no issue; and that Stephen and Keziah were dead and left no husband or wife and "left no lawful children"; and that the son, Charles Frederick was a minor; and that Mrs. Anna Kinard was dead and left only one daughter, Elenor, age about 10 years. RENTZ, SAMUEL (p. 236): (1st) The mortality schedule attached to the 1870 Census for Echols County, shows that Mr. Rentz died in January, 1870. The 1868 date was supplied by some of the descendants and is evidently incorrect. (2nd) The son, John H. Rentz, was born 1845. The 1855 date for him was supplied by his son, and is evidently incorrect. The 1870 Census shows him 25 years of age and married and with one child. (3rd) The son, Samuel, Jr., married twice. His second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of John Q. Lieupo of Cook County. RENTZ, SAMUEL (p. 236): He served as a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16 to Dec. 16, 1837. RENTZ, SAMUEL (p. 236): The mortuary schedule attached to the 1870 census of Echols county, shows that he died at the home of his widowed daughter, Mrs. Olive Lighsey. He was buried at Wayfare Church as was his wife; graves unmarked. RENTZ, SAMUEL R. - VOL.VII: In the sketch, the subject's death date should be given as Nov. 29, 1814 (not 1815). The second sentence in the last paragraph should read, " She is a daughter of the son, William L.
