Reminder: Citations, Transcription Accuracy - Steven J. Coker
Subject: Reminder: Citations, Transcription Accuracy
From: Steven J. Coker

This is a general guidelines reminder for the entire Forum. It is not directed
at any particular person. The quoted message shown below is used as an example
merely for convenience. Not because of any serious problems noted in the quoted
message. It appears to be an example of one of the better transcriptions we
typically see in the Forum.

Many of us sometimes scan or otherwise transcribe material. Before posting it
for the world to see, please take the time and effort needed to compare the
transcribed document carefully to the original and manually correct any errors
detected. Nobody is perfect, and some errors will slip past detection. So
before relying on such transcriptions, all serious researchers should
independently confirm its accuracy.

I STRONGLY request that everyone posting material in SCRoots take the time and
effort necessary to minimize errors of transcription to the best of their
ability. If you feel that a particular transcription is more prone to errors
for some reason, please include an explanatory note to that effect (e.g.
handwritten materials transcribed with some uncertainty, poor quality copies
used for transcription, limited proof-reading done).

Also, when posting materials from a particular work, please provide a full
citation for the work so that others may readily find it in the library or
archives. For example, the SCMAR cited below includes numerous volumes
published over many years. The material could be found with some effort based
on the citation given. But, a more complete citation is needed to readily find
the particular issue containing the extracted materials.
