READ, George R.	1806-1881  WILCOX

GEORGE R. READ was born at St. Mary's Florida, March 15, 1806, a son of Dr. 
Joseph Read, a native of Hartford, Conn.  Dr. Read and his family moved 
about 1810-1812 to Pulaski County, Georgia, and located at the new county 
site of Hartford, where George R. Read grew up.  He (George R.) was married 
September 4, 1828, in Telfair County (territory now in Dodge) to Miss 
Cecelia Reeves, daughter of Drury Reeves (q.v.).  She was born February 18, 
1810, in South Carolina, and died October 27, 1855, at the family home in 
Irwin, now Wilcox County, Georgia.  To Mr. and Mrs. Read were born twelve 
children:

1. Elizabeth	b. 1830, m. Archibald McIntyre, October 18, 1849.
2. Drury	b. 1831, m. (1) Sibbiah Wilcox May 25, 1854, daughter of T. L (2) 
Fannie Mashburn (3) Eliza Player.
3. Nancy	b. 1833, m. (1) John W. Wilcox, son of James L. (2) J. W. 
Mashburn.
4. Susannah	b. 1835, m. Clark Wilcox, son of John.
5. Martha	b. 1837, m. R. O. Holton of Wilcox Co.
6 Henry	b. 1839, never married.
7. Celia Ann	b. 1842, m. (1) Wiley Williams (2) Hugh McCartney.
8. Mary Louisa	b. 1843, m. R. V. Bowen.
9. George R.	b. 1845, m. Elizabeth Ewing.
10. Roxanne	b. 1847, m. Thomas D. Wilcox, son of George.
11. Sarah	b. 1848, m. (1) J. H. Dykes (2) J. T. Floyd.
12. Sam Brown	b. 1850, m. Harriet Hollingworth, daughter of J. V.

The first Mrs. Read having died, Mr. Read married Miss Frances McCall, 
daughter of Jehu McCall of Irwin (now Wilcox) County, but there was no 
further issue.
Mr. Read and his first wife were members of New Hope Primitive Baptist 
Church which they joined in 1841.  He was church clerk 1842-1847.  They 
were dismissed by letter July 31, 1847, but received back March 31, 1849, 
and he again served as church clerk 1849-1864.  In the meantime he was 
ordained a deacon March 2, 1856.  Mr. Read was expelled May 21, 1864 for 
joining the Masonic Lodge, but was restored March 2, 1867, and served a 
third term as church clerk 1867-1872 when he resigned.  He died a member, 
September 17, 1881.
Mr. Read was Representative from Irwin County 1853-1854, and in 1857 became 
county surveyor of Irwin.  The same year (1857), Wilcox County was created 
partly out of Irwin and he was cut into that county.  He served as a 
Justice of the Inferior Court of Irwin County, 1841-1844, and in Wilcox 
County, 1862-1865.
The Read home was in the 1st District of Irwin County, now the 1st Land 
District of Wilcox.
