Some of my husbands mothers family (The Albrights) were among those
"regulators" because of the tax. A poll tax against every man whether
rich or poor which was very unfair for the poor. Following the "War of
the Regulators" and the Battle of the Alamance, May 16, 1771 (sometimes
referred to as "the first battle of the Revolutionary War") large
numbers of people began leaving North Carolina and moving into eastern
Tennessee -( another migration pattern). Phillip and Christina (Clapp)
Albright were among the first to leave. Part of this was in "The History
of Tennessee" and taken from an Albright book. When the taxes were taken
only at five specified places by the sheriff that seemed to be the straw
that broke the camels back. (Reminded me of Bible times when taxes and
census were taken - people had to go specific places)And if the sheriff
had to go elsewhere, he would "distrain at a cost of 2s 8d for each
distress"
Your history lessons are very fascinating and helpful - Keep them up. -
I have no ancestors in SC that I know of yet but who knows - I've
been looking for Willie Ann Acree for several years supposedly born
in Lee Co. Va but maybe in NC, Ky or Tenn. B. May 1850 but not on
census records of Va for 1850. Her parents were Isaac and Sarah.
