Subject: Records at SC Archives From: Joanne Harley Date: March 18, 2001 Someone recently asked me to post information on getting some records from the SC Dept. of Archives, especially to help the newcomers to genealogy. Here goes. http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/mailpol.htm Click on the above and it will take you to the page you need to email the Archives. Ask them for the cost of printing out the GRANTEE-GRANTOR and reverse (grantor-grantee) index for Deeds for whatever county you are working on. You can ask for the whole thing or just the date range you are interested in. They will compute the cost and email you back. They have marriage bonds , wills, etc. on film as well. I think they may have a rule about asking for no more than one Surname (or maybe two at a time). Check on this. (Example: I would ask for the years of 1750-1850 for Bundy, Marlboro Co., SC) What the Grantee-Grantor index will tell you is when your ancestor, and other family members/locals sharing the same name, were in a given county, (years) and who they were "buying" land from, and sometimes where the land was located. It might also include a wife, who may have been on the deed with her husband. The Grantor-Grantee index will tell you when your ancestor was selling his land (maybe getting ready to move?) and it also lists who was buying it. (Maybe a son, son-in-law, or a neighbor). EXAMPLE: DATE; GRANTEE GIVEN NAME GRANTOR BOOK PAGE 5-16-1793 MACLEOD, RODERICK TRISTRAM THOMAS AA 313 For more information, you can then go to that book and read the particulars. Hope this helps someone. I've been doing this for twenty years, and this is something I just learned last year.
