RAINES, LUCIAN H.	1801-1858 	THOMAS

Lucian Hamilton Raines was born in Hancock county, Nov. 29,1801, a son of 
Robert Raines, R.S., and his wife Sarah Thweatt Hamilton, 1775-1850, 
daughter of John Hamilton and wife Tobitha Thweatt, and sister of Col. 
Everard Hamilton (q.v.). Lucian H. Raines after his father's death in 
Twiggs county July 31, 1816, came with his widowed mother and the eight 
other Raines children when they moved to the new county of Thomas soon 
after its creation in 1825. Lucian H. and his sister Emily Goodwin Raines 
married sister and brother, he married Ann Emily Blackshear, Jan. 24, 1831, 
and she marrying Gen. Thomas E. Blackshear, Dec. 8, 1831, in Thomas county, 
they being two of the five children of Edward Blackshear and his wife Emily 
Goodwin Mitchell Blackshear (Vol. V), so that Lucian H. Raines and his 
sister Emily were their cousins of the half-blood. Lucian H. Raines and his 
wife had eight children, viz:

2. SarahAnn	b. 1833, 	m. Charles Powell Chaires of Leon Co. Fla.
3. Robert R.	b. 1834,	m. Mary Hart, dau. of John S. of Leon Co. Fla.
4. Mary Elizabeth	b. 1837 	died single.
5. Harriet Blackshear	b. 1839,	m. Fletcher McQueen of Fla.
6. Francis Mitchell 	b. 1842, 	died single.
7. Robert Mitchell 	b. 1847, 	died single.
8. Lucian H. Jr. 	b. 1850, 	m. Ann M. Davenport, dau. of Maj. Hugh M. of 
Savannah.

Mr. Raines was the owner of a fine plantation near Thomasville and 'was an 
influential man in his county in his day. He died in the prime of life in 
1868 when he was about fifty-seven years of age.

RAINES, ROBERT	1766-1816 		HANCOCK

Robert Raines was born July 11, 1766 in Sussex, Virginia, a son of John and 
his wife, Amy G. Mitchell Raines (widow of Thomas Mitchell, and daughter of 
John Goodwyn). Robert was married to Sarah T. Hamilton, born November 23, 
1775, in Amelia County, Virginia, a daughter of John and Tobitha T. 
Hamilton. To Robert and Sarah, nine children were born:

1. Martha Everard Hamilton 	b. ????, m. Dr. Thomas W. Terrell.
2. Lucian Hamilton	b. 1801, m. Ann Emily Blackshear, 1/24/1830.
3. Angeline Goodwyn	b. ????, m. Thomas P. Chaires.
4. John William	b. ????,	died single.
5. Sarah Thweatt	b. ????,	m. Joseph DuPont.
6. Henrietta Louisa	b. ????, m. Joseph Murphy.
7. Robert Henry	b. ????, m. Martha Watson, dau. of Michael.
8. Emily Goodwyn	b. 1815, m. Gen. Thomas E. Blackshear, 12/8/31.
9. Thomas Cadwallander	b. ????, 	died single.

Robert Raines served, with distinction, as Captain of the Dragoons in the 
Revolutionary War. One authority says he was Captain of the 4th Company, 
1st Regiment, Georgia Troops in the Revolution. Robert moved to Georgia and 
settled first in Hancock County. He served as a Representative there in 18 
10 and 18 11. He was later a Major in the Georgia Militia. He moved to 
Twiggs County, where he died, July 31, 1816. His widow, Sarah, later moved 
to Thomas County with some of the children. She is listed in the 1850 
census of Thomas County living alone, adjacent to her son, Lucian. She died 
July 13, 1850, in Thomas County.

THOMAS GOODWIN MITCHELL, a Revolutionary soldier, was one of the first 
settlers of Thomas County, and died there in 1826, shortly after moving 
there.  He was born in 1756 in Virginia, a son of Thomas Mitchell 
(1722-1784) and his wife, Amy Goodwin Mitchell.  He was a grandson of Henry 
and Tobitha Mitchell of Virginia.  He married Ann Raines, 1761-1832, a 
daughter of Nathaniel Raines and Susannah Parham Raines of Virginia. 
 Nathaniel Raines was also a Revolutionary soldier of Virginia.
