Cheryl, I always start off by asking what he looked like if I didn't have a 
photo.  That usually gets them started and then I ask who in the family he 
resembled and did he go to church and if so, what church or religion.  Once 
you get past those openers, you can find lots to follow up on just by the 
responses you get.  The things I'm most interseted in is not so much his 
background as what type of person he was -- hardworking, kind, loving, loyal, 
responsible.  And, most of all, I want to know if he had a sense of humor and 
what he did for FUN.  Once I can get an overview of the man, then the actual 
family line can be pieced together.  This is just my way of getting things 
going, but I'm sure other people have their own system.  Nina
