Subject: Question About Early Marriages....... From: Kinseeker4 Date: December 19, 1999 I have been meaning to ask this question for some time now, and am hoping that some of you out there with more expertise than I have, will be able to give me an answer. It concerns what was considered legal marrying age in South Carolina [Lancaster County] in 1849. My 3xg/g'parents, Andrew Jackson and Lydia Jane [BAKER] BAKER were married sometime early in 1849 [I still have not found proof of the exact date] in the Flat Creek area of Lancaster County. At the time of this marriage, Andrew Jackson BAKER was about 24 years old. Lydia Jane BAKER [her maiden name was also BAKER], was 13 years of age. According to all of the records that I have been able to find on the family, this was "not" a shotgun wedding, as they did not have their first child until January of 1852. Also, I have yet to prove any connection between the two BAKER lines beyond this marriage. Any suggestions and/or help with this would be greatly appreciated.
