Cynthia: Virginia pronounces it Poo-shay! But then, I love to hear Va.
talk anyway! I suppose you know that all of the early Gourdins (except
Louis) are buried at St. Stephens also. Felicia

Then at least it appears not to be my John WHITE. I do realize how
common that name is, but when I saw that it made me sick. My Moses WHITE the
son of John WHITE married Martha WOFFORD d/o Joseph WOFFORD of Spartanburg,
SC.
I have no idea what occupation John or Moses had.
Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Hi, thanks for your reply. My name is pronounced PaSHAY.or PorSHAY, but
generally the first is the way we say it. My inlaws and lots of family are
at St Stephen's Church Yard. I have been working on the Porcher family,
also, but that family's history is well-documented by the Huguenot Society
and others.

Thanks for the info on John White, the stone cutter. There are several
generations of Whites
who were stone cutters and I believe one of them had a daughter named Sarah
Jane White who married Joseph Henry Villeneuve. Joseph Henry was also a
stonecutter, but none exist among his ancestors -- they were merchants, so I
believe he may have learned his trade from a member of his wife's family.
Joseph Henry Villeneuve carved the Confederate Monument at Cheraw, SC (St
David's Parish Cemetery). His family plot is also there, and Joseph Henry's
stone was signed by a White. Would really like to figure out this
connection. chp

Blair, George and William, I am searching for information on George (b 1750)
and William Blair (b 1739) in Ireland. Arrived Charleston South Carolina in
March or before 1766, possibly Sept.1765. They were Irish Protestants
(possibly Presbyterians) that came and received Bounty Land in Belfast
Township of Granville Country, South Carolina. Have copies of original land
grants dated March 1766. Land promoters in South Carolina at this time were
Arthur Dobbs and Matthew Rea that also had land in Georgia. It is said that
Rea made a trip back to his home area County Down -- Lisburn, Ballynahinch
and Dromore to recruit settlers.

Seeking information on Jeremiah Thomas, place of Birth and parents. Through
a lease Jeremiah Thomas of the state of GA, planter, was present in Edgefield
County, 96 Dist, SC in Oct 1795. Sold land granted to him in Oct 1794 on
Little Steven's Creek and waters of the Savannah River. His name appears on
the SC 1800 census. I believe he had at least two sons, Joshua, b 1799 and
Jeremiah 1800 something. Joshua was my GGGrandfather. My GGrandfather was
William A. Thomas born in Green Cty, AL in 1829 and Grandfather was Charles
William Thomas b Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in 3-10-1863 where he married Sallie
Frances Blair in 1890 and moved to Houston, TX where he worked for the
Southern Pacific RR. Joshua and Jeremiah were present in Scooba, Kemper Cty,
MS, in the mid/late 1800s. Joshua at age 71 married to a Narcissa with a son
David on the 1870 census. I have these Thomas's in Texas to date. There was
a Josiah Thomas at the Red Bank Baptist church on the little Saluda River in
Edgefield Dist before 1792. He was on the 1790 census for Edgefield Dist,
SC. Thought these names might be of the same family somehow.

Greetings,

I have for many years been researching my gr gr grandfather NATHAN DAVIS
(1786 - ?) who's son was named LEVI FOWLER DAVIS (1819 - 1888)

NATHAN DAVIS was first found by this researcher in LAUDERDALE COUNTY ALABAMA.
NATHAN DAVIS was in Lauderdale Co. from about 1821 until about 1842, when he
moved to DESOTO COUNTY, MS.
Family legend has NATHAN DAVIS coming from South Carolina, but I have never
been able to locate the place of his birth nor who his parents were.
I offer the following information in hopes of finding additional information
about NATHAN DAVIS

These are assumptions only:

Nathan was first married to EMILY FOWLER in South Carolina.
EMILY FOWLER was the child of MARTHA O. FOWLER and LEVI FOWLER.
MARTHA O> FOWLER came to Lauderdale County Alabama with her daughter and her
son-in-law NATHAN.
EMILY FOWLER DAVIS died about 1819 at the birth or complications from the
birth of her son LEVI FOWLER DAVIS.
Her mother MARTHA FOWLER and Nathan's 2nd wife EMILY McLUSTER (McALLISTER)
raised LEVI FOWLER DAVIS.

Facts:

LEVI FOWLER DAVIS married NANCY GERMAN (JARMAN, GARMAN) in Monroe County
Mississippi in 1841.
MARTHA O. FOWLER has a headstone in the Wesley Chaple Methodist church
cemetery in Lauderdale Co. Alabama, which says:
MARTHA O. FOWLER, wife of LEVI FOWLER
and gives her birthdate as 6 May 1769 and her death date 11 July 1841.
There is no headstone for LEVI FOWLER in this cemetery.

If anyone can offer additional information, it would be appreciated.
