It must have been written by the lady herself. It's also rather entertaining. She must have been quite a lady. I wish I had known her. From the Macon Telegraph, page 6A Sunday, October 4, 1998. (Macon, GA) PITTMAN, Sara Bissell Townsend: formerly of Macon, wishes it to be known that she conked out in Atlanta on 3 October 1998. She sadly misses family and friends. She was 90 years old. Born in Anderson, SC the fourth child of Dr. and Mrs. J. Bennett Townsend. Mrs. Ptitman was the South Carolina state champion debater before she attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. After graduation she taught Latin in Opelika, AL. In 1933 she moved to New York City where she met Henry Wooten Pittman Jr. a Macon native. There were married in 1935. Mr. Pittman, who died in 1993, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wooten Pittman, prominent Macon residents. While living in New York, Mrs. Pittman gave birth to her first child, Clarice Townsend Pittman Elder of Atlanta, and her only son, Henry Wooten Pittman, III who died at age 15 of cancer. The Pittmans moved to Dedham, Mass, outside Boston, and then to New Jersey where her youngest child, Mariu Pittman Sherer of Washington DC was born, In 1962, the Pittmans moved to Macon. Mrs. Pittman was active in the Shirley Hill Garden club. An award-winning flower arranger, Mrs. Pittman was a member of the Middle Georgia Judges Council. She served on the Mulberry Methodist Church Alter Guild for many of the 36 years she was a member of the church. Mrs. Pittman is survived by her two daughters, three grandchildren, Sara Pittman Elder Randall of San Diego, Callif.
