The Peebles were refugees from Flanders who settled on the River Tweed in
southern Scotland before the year 1115, when their homes were inundated
by the sea.  Captain David Peebles, a Royalist Officer living in
Scotland, fought for Charles I against Oliver Cromwell.  When the
Roylalists were defeated, Cromwell conedmned him and other supporters of
Charles I to the block.  David, along with 300-400 others, escaped to
America and settled near Petersburg, Charles City County [present Prince
George County] in Virginia.  On August 5, 1650 in Charles City Court,
David received a patent on 833 acres where he established the "Bon
Accord" plantation.  This land, "lying up Powell's Creek at the head
thereof" being due the said David Peebles by and for the transportation
of seventeen persons into the colony. [See Charles City County, Virginia
Record Book 2, p. 261]
Later, he and Charles Sparrow patented 2,500 acres of land on both sides
of the Birchen [Birthnina] Swamp at the Indian town still known as Old
Town.  It was there he died prior to 1 September 1659.  There is no
indication that David's wife, Elspet, or young children came to Virginia
with him.  She may have died before he left Scotland.  In 1655, David
[about aged 61] married Elizabeth Bishop and they had two children;
Christian and William.
David appears in Charles City Court Order Book beginning in 1655 as a
Justice of the County Court, a vestryman of Westover Parish and Captain
of the Militia.
 The area of his charge lay between Powells and Wards Creeks on the south
side of the James River.  His militia was involved in subduing some
Indian trouble in the summer of 1656 and it appears he was injured.  He
was inactive and perhaps an invalid for two or more years.
