Subject: Re: OUR MAHAFFEY LINEAGE From: Austinart Date: July 03, 1998 Contents of this message: Rabun Cemetery and Will of Hugh Mahaffey To Jimmie Owens and other MAHAFFEY researchers, Thanks for the excellent summary of our email transmissions during the past few weeks. I read with particular mention, Jimmie, your comment about Daurice, who you say was familiar with a marriage of a MAHAFFEY dau and a HENDERSON. Could you please identify for me, which of the email addresses on you message could be from, the said, Daurice ? I would like to correspond further with her. Each day I turn up something new about the LAURENS Co families. ======= More about Rabun Creek Baptist Church cemetery and the MAHAFFEY fam. The two volume set: CHURCH CEMETERIES LAURENS CO, SC is useful. Volume one by Col James Leland Bolt and Margaret Eltinge Bolt also shows the Rabun Creek Baptist Church. I need to go back to the library and copy the page for you. I copied only the HENDERSON-SIMPSON CEM , which I sent yesterday on the Laurens Co, list. The page I copied from BURYING GROUNDS, GRAVEYARDS AND CEMETERIES, LAURENS CO, SC, VOL 1, compiled by Laurens Dist Chapter SC Gen Soc 1990 showed that there were many markers with no names or carving of old stone that was unreadable. Since we know that the MAHAFFEYs were partly responsible for starting the church and were very early in the community, it is likely that their markers were the oldest ones. Here is a quote from: MAR AND DEATH NOTICES FROM BAPT. NEWSPAPERS OF SC. by Brent H. Holcomb 1996; p 200; The Baptist Courier, for issue preceding Nov 29, 1883. "Mrs Elizabeth MAHAFFEY was born Apr 21, 1810, and departed this life, Oct 22nd 1883, in the 74th year of her age. She united with the church at Rabun Creek, Laurens Co, in 1832, and was baptized by Rev Joseph Babb...with her husband Allen MAHAFFEY moved to Anderson Co, and by letter united with Cedar Grove Church." There are many other snips from early newspapers of genealogical interest in this book. You should look at it if it is available at your library. ================ WILL OF HUGH MAHAFFEY from a transcription in LAURENS CO SC WILLS; p 89-90.
