Just as you, thumbing through as many books as possible (before the 4p closing at the Historical Society) I came across the Orphanange book. I am -assuming- that this book may have been "History and Records of the Charleston Orphan House 1860-1900". What a welcomed sight to find these lost children. I first viewed a 20th century book on the oprhanage, filled with photos and more like past members (mostly female) memories of the house. When I viewed these photos I found many barefoot boys with looks in their eyes that grabbed at my heart, I was overwhelmed with compassion as my own Grandfather was raised in this orphanage (at an earlier time than what was covered by this book). His parents had both died shortly after his birth. And though the stories I heard from him were much more dark (being sent to a closet for punishment, and beaten for sharing his food with a hungry boy), I felt his graditude of having somewhere to live. Many family members were not aware of children being placed in orphanages and, therefore left out of family histories. I have seen many trees that -purposely- did not include children that lived short lives. To me ALL members are of value, not only as people, but their names and history may give important facts about the family.
