Dear Kathy,

My sympathy on your loss.... Sure wouldn't want to lose genealogy
copies!

Thank you for your response. Just as you, thumbing through as many books
as possible (before the 4p closing at the Historical Society) I came
across the Orphanange book. I am -assuming- that this book may have been
"History and Records of the Charleston Orphan House 1860-1900".

What a welcomed sight to find these lost children. I first viewed a 20th
century book on the oprhanage, filled with photos and more like past
members (mostly female) memories of the house. When I viewed these
photos I found many barefoot boys with looks in their eyes that grabbed
at my heart, I was overwhelmed with compassion as my own Grandfather was
raised in this orphanage (at an earlier time than what was covered by
this book). His parents had both died shortly after his birth. And
though the stories I heard from him were much more dark (being sent to a
closet for punishment, and beaten for sharing his food with a hungry
boy), I felt his graditude of having somewhere to live.

Many family members were not aware of children being placed in
orphanages and, therefore left out of family histories. I have seen many
trees that -purposely- did not include children that lived short lives.
To me ALL members are of value, not only as people, but their names and
history may give important facts about the family.

I look forward to sharing what records I have,
Janet Nielson Jilote
